Lessons in this series: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Overview

After completing this Sunday school lesson, the children will understand that God created the heavens and the earth.

TOPICS

Creation, Majesty, Power of God

AS KIDS ARRIVE (15 minutes)

As the children arrive, have the following items laying on a table; pencil, watch, and a dictionary. While the children wait for class to begin, ask them to try to figure out what the items have in common and share their thoughts on how they think the items came to be on the table. List their thoughts on the board. After discussing what the children come up with, explain that what these items have in common is that they were all created and did not evolve.

MEMORY WORK (12 minutes)

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1 NIV Have the children draw a picture of God creating the heavens and the earth. Then have them write Genesis 1:1 on the top or bottom of their picture.

SCRIPTURE READING AND DISCUSSION (15 minutes)

Today we will learn how God created the heavens and the earth. Just like the items on the table; pencil, watch, and the dictionary, the heavens and earth were created. Wouldn't it be silly to think that the pencil evolved out of the tabletop? The pencil, watch, and dictionary were designed carefully and intentionally. So it was with the creation of the world, God carefully and intentionally designed the heavens and the earth. Listen carefully as I read the creation story to you. When I'm finished, I will ask you some very interesting questions. Let's see if we can find what God created each day. Read Genesis 1:1-2:3 Discussion Questions: 1. What did God create on the first day? (Light) 2. What did God create on the second day? (Sky) 3. What did God create on the third day? (Land, vegetation, plants and trees) 4. What did God create on the fourth day? (Sun, moon and stars) 5. What did God create on the fifth day? (Creatures of the sea and every winged bird) 6. What did God create on the sixth day? (Man, woman and all the land creatures) 7. Why did God rest on the seventh day? (To give us an example of how we should rest one day a week from our work and use that day to worship our Creator.) 8. Why did God want Adam and Eve to rule over every living creature? (Allow for answers.)

APPLICATION (4 minutes)

Just as the pencil, watch, and dictionary had a creator (man), so it is with the heavens and the earth. They were created by God. It would be silly to think that a watch would come together if we randomly threw gears and springs into the air. It's just as silly to think that the heavens and the earth came together by chance or an unexpected big bang. There is too much order and design in the world even to consider that it all came together by accident. We should thank God and worship Him for creating us.

NEXT WEEK

The next lesson in the series, will be about the "World's best play ground!"
