SERIES DESCRIPTION

A five week lesson series that examines the life of King David from Killing Goliath to becoming the second king of Israel.

Lesson 1 - Anointed for God

After completing this lesson, children will understand that God looks at our inner being, our soul, and sees not only how we act in public, but our inner thoughts and private actions as well. Students learn that God liked what He saw in the heart of a young man named David and selected him to be a king. Memory Work - Luke 6:45; Scripture Reading and Disucssion - 1 Samuel 16:1-13.

Application: The Bible tells us that man looks at the outward appearance, while God looks at the heart. In today's lesson, we read about a young man named David, who although the youngest of seven brothers, was chosen by God to become the next king. David had a heart for God and wanted to please Him. We would be wise to follow David's example to seek after the Lord and strive to please Him with all of our hearts.

Lesson 2 - The Giant Killer

After completing this lesson, the children will see how God enabled David to be brave in the face of danger. Memory Work - Deuteronomy 31:6; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 17:1-50.

Application: Sometimes we may be the only one willing to make a stand for God, which can be scary, but we can take comfort in knowing that the battle is the Lord's. Even though the task may seem gigantic, God will never give us more than we can handle. We should trust God and be encouraged by the strength He provides.

Lesson 3 - Friends for Life

After completing this lesson, the children will understand the importance of developing godly friendships. Memory Work - Proverbs 17:17; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 1 Samuel 18:1-11, 19:1-10, 20:1-42.

Application: Godly friendships can last for eternity and should be cherished. Like Jonathan, we should be willing to make sacrifices to help our friends whenever possible. True friends build each other up, keep each other accountable, and are there through the good times and the bad.

Lesson 4 - Self-Control

Children will learn that having self-control means to follow the Will of our Lord, instead of giving into the temptations of this world. Memory Work - Romans 8:8; Scripture Reading and Disucssion - 1 Samuel 24:1-22.

Application: Having self-control means to keep your thoughts, actions, and desires in line with God's Will for you. It means to resist things that may seem good on the surface, but are actually bad. We call it self-indulgence when someone gives in to these bad actions or desires. For example, we can indulge in food, bad language, harmful substances like drugs, gossip, sassing, and many other things. But when we chose to have self-control over these harmful desires, we will be following the Will of God.

Lesson 5 - The Dancing King

This lesson shows how King David displayed his joy and gratitude as he brought the Ark of God back to Jerusalem. His example teaches us that we should be unashamed in expressing praise to our Lord in everything we do. Memory Work - Psalm 86:12; Scripture Reading and Discussion - 2 Samuel 6:12-23.

Application: The main thing to take away from today's lesson is that people worship and praise the Lord in different ways. Don't look down on someone because he or she worships the Lord in a different way from you. If someone is truly worshiping from his or her heart, that is pleasing to God. It is also fine to dance before the Lord, so long as the dance is in good taste and glorifies God. This attitude should also carry over into the rest of your life, not only while worshiping at church. You should have the same joyful attitude no matter what you are doing, whether it is, playing, studying at school, cleaning your room, helping mom or dad with the dishes, or watching your younger brother or sister. Do it for the Lord!
