SERIES DESCRIPTION

In this series, children will be taught some main themes from the book of James. Themes that will teach them to become perseverant, doers, ‘tongue tamers,’ wise, and even submissive to God. The book of James is very applicable to our daily lives. His message is based on Jesus' famous "Sermon on the Mount."

Lesson 1 - Becoming Perseverant

After completing this lesson, the children will be challenged to persevere, no matter what activity they are doing, because they will become mature and complete, not lacking anything. Memory Work - James 1:12; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 1:2-8,12.

Application: When we are faced with difficult times, should we give up or persevere? If we choose to persevere and pass the test and love God, you will become more mature. One day you will be complete and you will receive the crown of life that God promised!

Lesson 2 - Becoming a Doer

After completing this lesson, the children will understand the importance of living a life that shows what they believe. They will be challenged to become doers of the word, not merely hearers. Memory Work - James 2:26; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 1:19-25, 2:14-16.

Application: We are challenged to put deeds to what we believe. It’s not that our deeds save us, but they do show others what we claim to believe. Let’s become doers of the Word!

Lesson 3 - Becoming a Tongue Tamer

After completing this lesson, the children will understand the importance of taming their tongues. They will realize that the tongue has the power to either save or destroy someone. Memory Work - James 3:2; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 3:1-12.

Application: We need to realize how powerful our tongues are. With one word you can crush someone, or with one word you can encourage them. What will you choose to do with your tongue? Heal or destroy? Will you choose to become a tongue tamer?

Lesson 4 - Becoming Wise

After completing this lesson, the children will realize that there are two types of wisdom. In the end they will realize the importance of choosing God’s wisdom. Memory Work - James 3:17; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 3:13-18.

Application: We learned what wisdom is, how we can get it, and how to tell when someone is wise. Now that we know this, we need to decide to choose God’s wisdom in every situation, no matter how large or small we may think it is.

Lesson 5 - Becoming Submissive

After completing this lesson, the children will understand what it means to become submissive and what they can do to practice submission. Memory Work - James 4:7; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 4:1-10.

Application: It is important to learn to submit to God. Did you notice I said ‘learn’ to submit? Submission is not easy, but it is something you can practice with those in authority over you: parents, Sunday school teacher, school teacher, babysitter, aunts, uncles, etc. Start learning today how to submit.

Lesson 6 - Becoming a Glory-Giver

After completing this lesson, the children will realize that they need to give the credit, praise, or glory, to whom it is due, especially to God. Memory Work - james 4:14; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 4:13-17.

Application: W
e need to give credit, or glory, to who deserves the credit. We might need to give the credit to our parents, our teachers, our friends, our teammates, but we especially need to give it to God. We learned from James, that when we do not give credit or glory to the proper person, and give it to ourselves instead, it is a sin.

Lesson 7 - Becoming a Pray-er

After completing this lesson, the children will know how they should pray, when they should pray, and why it is important to include prayer as a regular part of their daily living. Memory Work - James 5:16; Scripture Reading and Discussion - James 5:13-18.

Application: We can all pray no matter what we are experiencing—trouble, joy, frustration, or sickness. We can and should always pray and know that God hears our prayers because we belong to Jesus.
